There is no single winner. Tally is better if you are a single-location business with one or two accountants, heavy voucher entry, deep inventory needs, and a CA who works in Tally. Zoho Books is better if you have multiple locations or remote staff, want your accounting connected to sales and inventory, need your CA to log in from anywhere, or want automation instead of manual entry.
On money: over five years, TallyPrime Silver works out to around Rs 40,500 for one user. Zoho Books Standard is about Rs 44,940 for three users. The gap is small. The moment you add Tally cloud hosting for remote access, Zoho Books becomes clearly cheaper.
We are a Zoho partner, so you would expect this article to end with “Zoho wins”. It does not. Tally is a genuinely good product and it is the right answer for a lot of Indian businesses. What follows is the comparison we actually give clients when they ask.
First, What Are You Actually Comparing?
These two are not the same category of software, and that is the root of most confusion.
TallyPrime
A desktop business management application from Tally Solutions, a Bengaluru company. You buy a licence once and own it. It handles accounting, inventory, GST, payroll, banking and reporting. TallyPrime 6.0 added Connected Banking with real-time bank balances and statement fetching, building on Connected GST from 5.0 and WhatsApp invoice sharing from 4.0. It is far more modern than the Tally most people remember from ten years ago.
Zoho Books
A cloud accounting platform from Zoho Corporation, a Chennai company. You subscribe monthly or annually. It handles invoicing, expenses, banking, GST filing, e-invoicing, basic inventory, project billing and reporting — in a browser, on mobile, and through a Windows app. It connects natively to Zoho CRM, Inventory, Payroll, Desk and Analytics.
Short version: Tally is software you install. Zoho Books is a service you log into. That difference drives almost every other difference.
Where Tally Genuinely Wins
Any comparison that pretends Tally has no advantages is selling you something. Here is where it is honestly stronger.
1. Speed of data entry
Tally’s keyboard-driven voucher entry is fast. An experienced operator entering 200 purchase vouchers a day will be quicker in Tally than in any browser-based system. If your business is high-volume data entry, this is a real productivity difference, not nostalgia.
2. Your CA already knows it
Most Indian chartered accountants have spent their careers in Tally. They know the shortcuts, the reports, the audit views. Handing them a Tally backup takes one minute. This matters more at year-end than people admit.
3. One-time cost, if you stay small
A single-user Tally licence is bought once. There is no monthly bill that grows every year. For a small business that will never need more than one or two users and no remote access, the long-run cost is genuinely low.
4. Works without internet
Tally runs locally. Power cut, ISP outage, factory in an area with bad connectivity — the books still work. Zoho Books needs a connection. For a site office in a remote industrial area, that is a serious point.
5. Deep inventory for trading and distribution
Godowns, batches, expiry dates, multiple units of measure, stock ageing, price levels — Tally handles all of this out of the box. In Zoho Books, advanced inventory features start on higher plans or need Zoho Inventory as a separate product.
Where Zoho Books Genuinely Wins
1. Access from anywhere, by anyone who should
Your accountant at the office, your partner travelling, your CA in another city, and you on your phone can all be in the same live data at the same time. In Tally, that needs a cloud hosting arrangement or Tally Virtual User access, and both cost extra.
2. Automation instead of typing
Recurring invoices, automatic payment reminders, bank feed rules, receipt autoscan, workflow approvals. Zoho Books is built to reduce manual entry. Tally, by design, is built to make manual entry fast. Different philosophies, and the automation one wins when your team is small and your volume is growing.
3. Customer-facing features
A self-service customer portal where clients see their invoices and outstanding balance. Online payment links. Branded invoice templates. These reduce collection calls, which is where most Indian service businesses lose time.
4. It connects to everything else
This is the biggest structural advantage. Zoho Books plugs into Zoho CRM, Inventory, Desk, Projects, Payroll and Analytics without a connector in between. Sales closes a deal, the invoice raises itself, the payment updates the deal. If you are already thinking about a connected setup, our guide to Zoho CRM integrations for Indian businesses covers what that looks like in practice.
5. Multi-branch and multi-GSTIN without pain
Adding a second location in Tally usually means a second licence, a second data file and a consolidation exercise. In Zoho Books it is a location add-on and the reports stay unified.
6. Free plan to start
A business under Rs 25 lakh turnover can run GST-compliant accounting at zero software cost, with no time limit. Tally has no equivalent.

| Learning curve for accountants | Familiar to most Indian CAs | New, but simpler for non-accountants |
The Real Cost Over Five Years
This is where most comparisons go wrong. They put a one-time licence price next to a monthly subscription and call Tally cheaper. Run it over five years and the picture changes.
Licence and subscription costs
| Option | Year 1 | Years 2-5 (each) | 5-Year Total | Users Covered |
| TallyPrime Silver | Rs 22,500 | Rs 4,500 (TSS) | Rs 40,500 | 1 |
| TallyPrime Gold | Rs 67,500 | Rs 13,500 (TSS) | Rs 1,21,500 | Unlimited on LAN |
| Zoho Books Free | Rs 0 | Rs 0 | Rs 0 | 1 + accountant |
| Zoho Books Standard | Rs 8,988 | Rs 8,988 | Rs 44,940 | 3 |
| Zoho Books Professional | Rs 17,988 | Rs 17,988 | Rs 89,940 | 5 |
| Zoho Books Premium | Rs 35,988 | Rs 35,988 | Rs 1,79,940 | 10 |
All figures exclude 18% GST. Tally licence prices are set by Tally Solutions and are the same across authorised partners. Zoho Books figures use annual billing. Confirm current rates before you buy — both vendors revise pricing.
The costs that do not appear on the price page
| Hidden Cost | TallyPrime | Zoho Books |
| Remote access for a travelling owner or off-site CA | Cloud hosting, commonly quoted at Rs 500-1,500 per user per month | Included |
| Second branch or second GSTIN | Often a second licence and a separate data file | Location add-on from Rs 600 per month |
| Server or good desktop hardware | Required | Not required |
| Data backup | Your responsibility | Handled by Zoho |
| Customisation (TDL development) | Charged by the Tally partner | Mostly configuration, no code |
| Extra users | Gold covers unlimited on LAN | Rs 150 per user per month on annual billing |
| Payroll | Included | Zoho Payroll, separate subscription |
| Implementation and training | Usually bundled by the dealer | One-time project cost |
The honest cost verdict
One accountant, one office, no remote access needed: Tally is cheaper. Two or more people who need access from different places: Zoho Books usually costs less once you price Tally cloud hosting properly. Run your own numbers with your actual user count before deciding — not the headline licence price.

GST and Compliance: Are They Equal Now?
Largely, yes. This used to be Tally’s untouchable advantage. It is not any more.
| Compliance Need | TallyPrime | Zoho Books |
| GST invoices (CGST/SGST/IGST) | Yes | Yes |
| GSTR-1 filing | Connected GST upload | Direct filing as registered GSP |
| GSTR-3B | Yes | Yes |
| GSTR-2A / 2B reconciliation | Yes | Yes |
| E-invoicing (IRN, QR) | Yes | Yes |
| E-way bill | Yes | Yes |
| TDS and TCS | Yes | Yes |
| Audit trail (edit log) | Yes, from Release 2.1 | Yes |
| HSN / SAC handling | Yes | Yes |
Both are compliant. Choose on how you work, not on whether the software can file GST — because both can.
“But My CA Only Works in Tally”
This is the single most common objection, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a dismissal.
It used to be a genuine blocker. It is much less of one now, for three reasons:
- Zoho Books gives you a free accountant login. Your CA gets access without you paying for a user seat. Many CAs now prefer this to chasing you for a backup file.
- Reports export cleanly. Trial balance, ledgers, P&L and balance sheet all export to Excel in formats CAs work with daily.
- A growing number of Indian CA firms now run Zoho Practice or handle multiple clients on Zoho Books. The skills gap is closing fast.
That said — if your CA flatly refuses and you value that relationship more than the software, that is a legitimate business decision. Talk to them before you decide, not after you have migrated.
Can You Use Both?
Yes, and plenty of Indian businesses do. It is a common middle path, especially for manufacturers and distributors who are not ready to leave Tally but need cloud visibility.
Typical setup:
- Zoho CRM handles the sales pipeline and quotes.
- Zoho Books handles invoicing, receivables and the customer portal.
- Tally stays as the statutory book of account that the CA works in.
- A scheduled sync moves invoices, ledgers and outstanding balances between them.
The catch: Tally is a desktop product, so this needs a connector or a middleware layer with proper error handling — not a plugin you download and forget. It is real Zoho integration and custom development work, typically four to eight weeks. Done well it works reliably for years. Done cheaply it silently drops records and you find out at audit.
Migrating From Tally to Zoho Books
If you have decided to move, here is what the process actually involves. This is not a one-click import, and anyone who tells you it is has not done one.
What does not map automatically
- Tally’s ledger groups do not match Zoho Books’ chart of accounts structure. Every ledger needs mapping.
- Tally voucher types do not translate one-to-one into Zoho document types.
- Godowns have no direct equivalent unless you also use Zoho Inventory.
- GST configuration has to be rebuilt from scratch, not imported.
The sequence
| Step | What Happens | Why It Matters |
| 1. Pick a cutover date | Usually 1 April, the start of the financial year. | Avoids splitting a year across two systems. |
| 2. Export from Tally | Chart of accounts, contacts, items, opening balances, outstanding bills, trial balance. | Export in Tally’s required report formats or the import fails. |
| 3. Clean the masters | Merge duplicate ledgers, drop dead accounts, fix GSTINs. | Bad data multiplies once it is in a new system. |
| 4. Build the mapping sheet | Every Tally ledger mapped to a Zoho Books account. | This is the real work. Get it wrong and every report is wrong. |
| 5. Configure GST first | GSTIN, registration date, e-invoicing, e-way bill settings. | One wrong GSTIN digit and every e-invoice is rejected. |
| 6. Import in order | Accounts, then contacts, then items, then opening balances, then transactions. | Zoho Books rejects records that reference data not yet imported. |
| 7. Connect banking | Set up bank feeds or connected banking. | Automated reconciliation is half the time saving. |
| 8. Parallel run | Keep Tally readable for a month or two. | Catches mismatches before they become audit issues. |
| 9. Reconcile and sign off | Match closing trial balance rupee for rupee. | No unexplained difference should survive go-live. |
Realistic timeline: two to four weeks for a service business with clean books. Six to ten weeks if you have inventory, multiple GSTINs, or years of history you want carried across.
Most businesses do not migrate historical vouchers. They take opening balances as on the cutover date and keep Tally as a read-only archive. It is faster, cheaper and less risky.
Which One Should You Choose? Decision Table
| Your Situation | Better Fit | Why |
| Freelancer or consultant under Rs 25 lakh | Zoho Books Free | Zero cost, GST-compliant invoicing |
| Single-location shop, one accountant, no remote need | TallyPrime Silver | Lower long-run cost, fast entry |
| Trading or distribution with godowns and batches | TallyPrime Gold | Inventory depth is hard to match |
| Service business or agency billing by project | Zoho Books Professional | Project billing, timesheets, customer portal |
| Two or more branches | Zoho Books | Unified data without licence duplication |
| Owner travels, CA is in another city | Zoho Books | Access is included, not an add-on |
| Already using Zoho CRM | Zoho Books | Native connection, no middleware |
| Factory with unreliable internet | TallyPrime | Works offline |
| Manufacturer wanting cloud sales but Tally accounts | Both, integrated | Keeps the CA happy, gives management visibility |
| Startup planning to scale fast | Zoho Books | Scales by plan, not by licence purchase |
The Verdict
Tally is not outdated. TallyPrime 6.0 with Connected Banking and Connected GST is a capable, modern product, and for a single-location business with one accountant it remains a sensible, low-cost choice.
Zoho Books wins when the business stops being one office with one accountant. Multiple locations, remote staff, a CA who is not in your building, a sales team whose deals should become invoices automatically, an owner who wants numbers on a phone — that is where cloud stops being a buzzword and starts being the reason you close your books on time.
One more thing worth knowing if you are still comparing options: QuickBooks is no longer available in India at all. We covered why in our Zoho Books vs QuickBooks India comparison. So in practice, this is a two-horse race.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Zoho Books better than Tally?
It depends on how you work, not on which product is objectively better. Zoho Books is better for cloud access, multi-location businesses, automation and integration with sales systems. Tally is better for fast voucher entry, deep inventory in trading and distribution, offline working, and businesses whose CA works exclusively in Tally.
Which is cheaper, Zoho Books or Tally?
For a single user with no remote access, TallyPrime Silver is cheaper over five years — roughly Rs 40,500 against Rs 44,940 for Zoho Books Standard. Once you add Tally cloud hosting for remote access, or need a second branch licence, Zoho Books generally works out cheaper.
Can Zoho Books replace Tally completely?
For most service businesses, agencies, consultancies and small traders, yes. For distribution businesses that depend on godown-wise stock, batch and expiry tracking, you would need Zoho Books plus Zoho Inventory, or a higher Zoho Books plan, to match what Tally does out of the box.
Does Zoho Books support GST filing like Tally?
Yes. Zoho is a registered GST Suvidha Provider, so GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B can be filed directly from the software, along with e-invoicing through the IRP and e-way bill generation. On compliance, the two are broadly equal today.
Will my CA accept Zoho Books?
Increasingly, yes. Zoho Books includes a free accountant login so your CA can work in your live data without you buying an extra seat, and all statutory reports export to Excel. Some CAs still prefer Tally. Have that conversation before you migrate, not after.
Can I use Tally and Zoho Books together?
Yes, and it is a common setup for manufacturers and distributors. Zoho CRM and Zoho Books handle sales and invoicing, Tally remains the statutory book of account, and a scheduled sync moves data between them. It requires custom integration work because Tally is a desktop application.
How long does Tally to Zoho Books migration take?
Two to four weeks for a straightforward service business. Six to ten weeks where inventory, multiple GSTINs or several years of history are involved. Most businesses migrate opening balances rather than full transaction history.
Does Tally work without internet?
Yes. TallyPrime runs locally, so accounting continues during an outage. Connected features like Connected Banking, e-invoicing and GST filing need a connection, but core data entry does not. Zoho Books requires internet access.
What is TSS and do I have to pay it every year?
TSS is Tally Software Services, the annual subscription covering statutory updates, upgrades, remote access and connected features. Your licence keeps working if TSS lapses, but you stop receiving GST and compliance updates — which makes it effectively mandatory for a GST-registered business.
Is Zoho Books free forever?
The free plan has no time limit for businesses with annual revenue under Rs 25 lakh. It is capped at 1 user plus 1 accountant login and 1,000 invoices a year. Cross the revenue threshold and you move to a paid plan.
